Our Maldives Honeymoon at Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa: What It’s Really Like Staying in an Overwater Bungalow

Our honeymoon in the Maldives was everything we had dreamed of — from waking up over turquoise water to feeding sharks at sunset and watching movies under the stars.

There are some holidays that stay with you forever, and our Maldives honeymoon is definitely one of them.

At the end of March 2023, we travelled to the Maldives for our honeymoon and stayed at Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa Maldives.

Before we went, I had imagined the Maldives would be beautiful, but I don’t think anything could have prepared me for what it would actually feel like to be there.

The turquoise water, the little island, getting on the seaplane, our overwater bungalow and the feeling of being completely surrounded by the ocean made it feel like we had stepped into another world.

And it wasn’t just about lying on a beach. During our stay we had the chance to do some amazing things — from feeding sharks at sunset and snorkelling to swimming with manta rays, watching movies under the stars and even having a special dinner under the night sky.

So, what was our Maldives honeymoon actually like?

Here’s everything I remember from our stay.

Why We Chose the Maldives for Our Honeymoon

When you’re choosing somewhere for your honeymoon, there’s something lovely about picking a destination that feels genuinely special.

For us, the Maldives had always been one of those dream destinations, a bucket list destination I’d had from being young.

I’d seen photographs of overwater bungalows surrounded by incredibly blue water and always thought it looked like somewhere we’d love to experience one day.

Our honeymoon felt like the perfect excuse.

We wanted somewhere beautiful and relaxing, somewhere we could celebrate getting married and have those memories we’d look back on for years.

The idea of staying in an overwater bungalow was a huge part of the appeal.

And when we arrived, it really did feel as special as I’d hoped.

How Much Did Our Maldives Honeymoon Cost?

One of the questions I know I’d want to know before booking a trip like this is: how much does a Maldives honeymoon actually cost?

We travelled to the Maldives at the end of March 2023 and paid £6741.92 for the two of us.

This included our flights, accommodation, transfers and all-inclusive board, as well as our stay in an overwater bungalow at Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa.

For a honeymoon in the Maldives, we felt this was really good value for the experience we had. We got to stay in an overwater bungalow, enjoy the beautiful island and take part in some amazing experiences during our stay.

Of course, prices can vary depending on the time of year, resort, length of stay, room type and what’s included in the package, so this is simply what we paid for our particular honeymoon in March 2023.

Our honeymoon at a glance

  • Destination:     Maldives
  • Resort:     Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa Maldives
  • When:     End of March 2023
  • Occasion:     Our honeymoon
  • Accommodation:     Overwater bungalow
  • Board:     All-inclusive
  • Flights:     Included (Emirates)
  • Transfers:     Included
  • Total:     £6,741.92 for two people

Looking back, I think the price was one of the things that made our honeymoon feel even more special. We had the luxury of an overwater bungalow, all-inclusive food and drinks, transfers and flights included, while still having so many experiences available to us on the island.

If you’re considering a Maldives honeymoon, I’d definitely recommend looking at the overall package rather than just the price of the room, as things like flights, transfers and food can make a big difference to the final cost.

Staying at Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa Maldives

Our home for the honeymoon was Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa Maldives, a small island resort surrounded by the Indian Ocean.

One of my favourite things about staying on an island like this was how different it felt from everyday life.

There was no rushing around trying to get from one place to another.

Instead, our days revolved around the sea, the weather, relaxing, food, activities and simply enjoying where we were.

And then there was our overwater bungalow.

Our Overwater Bungalow

Waking up over the water was something I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

Being able to step outside and see the ocean surrounding us made the room feel like part of the destination rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

Overwater Bungalow

The water was such an incredible colour, and I could have spent hours just sitting outside looking at it.

It was also the perfect setting for a honeymoon.

There was something very romantic about having our own little space above the water and being able to enjoy the views together.

Feeding Sharks at Sunset

One of the experiences that really stands out from our honeymoon was     feeding the sharks at sunset.

It’s definitely not something you get to do on every holiday!

Watching the sun begin to go down while seeing the sharks in the water was such a memorable experience.

Feeding the sharks at sunset

The colours of the sky combined with the water made the whole experience feel almost surreal.

It’s one of those memories where I can still picture the scene when I think back to the trip.

On the way back to our island, the watched the most beautiful sunset, the kind of sunset that feels like a dream.

The dreamiest Maldives sunset

Snorkelling in the Maldives

If you love being in the water, there was so much to do.

There were daily snorkelling trips, with trips available in both the morning and afternoon.

This was something I really enjoyed because it meant you could choose what suited you each day rather than feeling like you had to plan your entire holiday around activities.

The underwater world was completely different from anything I’d experienced before.

And being able to see the marine life in its natural environment was one of the highlights of the trip.

One thing I’d definitely recommend packing is swim shoes. There was so much coral around the island, and having something on our feet made getting in and out of the water much easier and more comfortable. It’s definitely something I’d make sure to pack if we went back.

Swimming With Manta Rays

One of the experiences we were really excited about was getting into the water to see the manta rays. We were lucky enough to spot them while we were out there, although they stayed at a distance rather than swimming right up close to us.

Even so, being in the water and knowing they were there was such an incredible feeling. Watching them move through the ocean in the distance was something I’ll always remember.

And our boat ride back to the island brought another little surprise. We spotted dolphins along the way, swimming alongside the boat, which was such a magical moment and completely unexpected.

For me, those are the moments that make a trip so memorable — the experiences you don’t necessarily plan for, but end up remembering forever.

Evenings on the Island

Our days weren’t the only thing that made the honeymoon special.

There was also plenty happening in the evenings.

There were shows and entertainment at night, which gave us something to look forward to after dinner.

One of the most memorable evenings was movie night under the stars.

There’s something so lovely about watching a film outside while you’re surrounded by the sounds of the island and the night sky.

Movie night under the stars

It was such a simple idea, but it’s one of those little experiences that made the trip feel different from an ordinary holiday.

Dining Under the Stars

We also decided to book an extra experience during our stay —   dining under the stars on the island.

For our honeymoon, it felt like the perfect thing to do.

Dining under the stars

It was one of those experiences that wasn’t necessarily about the food alone.

It was about the setting and the fact that we were there together.

If you’re visiting the Maldives for a honeymoon or another special occasion, I’d definitely look at what additional experiences your resort offers.

What Surprised Me Most About the Maldives

I expected the Maldives to be beautiful.

Obviously, I’d seen the photographs before we went.

But I don’t think photographs really prepare you for the colour of the water.

It genuinely looks unreal.

Another thing that surprised me was how quickly I got used to slowing down.

Normally, I like to explore when I’m on holiday. I want to see places, do things and make the most of every day.

The Maldives was different.

There was something about being surrounded by water and having nowhere else you needed to be that made slowing down feel completely natural.

And although we had plenty of activities to choose from, we never felt rushed.

We could snorkel, go on an excursion, relax, enjoy the pool or simply sit outside our bungalow and look at the sea.

What I Loved Most About Our Honeymoon

If I had to choose my favourite parts, it would be difficult because there were so many.

But the things that stand out most are:

🌊 The overwater bungalow

Waking up surrounded by water was a dream.

🦈 Feeding the sharks at sunset

Such a unique experience and one I’ll never forget.

🤿 The snorkelling

Having daily trips available meant there was always an opportunity to get in the water.

🐠 Spotting manta rays

Probably one of the most incredible experiences of the whole honeymoon. Topped off with seeing the Dolphins

🎬 Movie night under the stars

A simple but really memorable evening.

✨ Dining under the stars

The perfect romantic experience for a honeymoon.

But more than anything, I loved having that time together.

Our honeymoon wasn’t just about where we went.

It was about having that time to celebrate getting married and starting our life together.

What I Would Do Differently

As amazing as our honeymoon was, there are always things you think about afterwards.

If I were planning the trip again, I’d spend even more time researching all the experiences available on our island before we arrived and book the excursions as quickly as you can when you get there.

When you’re somewhere as beautiful as the Maldives, it’s easy to think you’ll spend the whole time relaxing — and you absolutely can.

But there are so many activities and experiences available that it’s worth knowing what’s on offer.

I’d also make sure I had plenty of space on my phone and camera for photographs and videos.

Trust me — you’ll want to photograph everything.

From the view outside your bungalow to the sunsets, underwater experiences and little moments around the island, there are so many memories you’ll want to capture.

What I Packed for Our Maldives Honeymoon

Packing for the Maldives was surprisingly simple because so much of your time is spent in swimwear, lightweight clothes and beachwear.

Some of the things I’d recommend taking include:

You’re going to take A LOT of photographs!

I’ll be creating a more detailed Maldives Honeymoon Packing List with all of my recommended essentials soon.

Is an Overwater Bungalow Worth It?

For our honeymoon, absolutely.

There is something really special about waking up above the ocean.

It’s not just the room itself — it’s the whole experience.

Opening the door in the morning and seeing the water, sitting outside together and simply being surrounded by the ocean made our stay feel incredibly special.

If you’re visiting the Maldives for a honeymoon, an anniversary or another big celebration, I personally think an overwater bungalow is something worth considering if it fits your budget.

It’s one of those experiences you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Would I Go Back to the Maldives?

Yes. Without hesitation.

Our Maldives honeymoon was one of those trips that I’ll always look back on with so much happiness.

We got to experience things I’d never done before, spend time somewhere incredibly beautiful and, most importantly, celebrate the beginning of our marriage.

Would I stay at exactly the same resort again?

I would love to but I would also love to experience another part of the Maldives one day, but Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa will always have a special place in my heart because it was where we spent our honeymoon.

And that’s something you can’t really recreate.

Final Thoughts

Our Maldives honeymoon at Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa was genuinely unforgettable.

From waking up in our overwater bungalow to feeding sharks at sunset, snorkelling, swimming with manta rays, watching movies under the stars and having a special dinner under the night sky, we made so many memories in such a short amount of time.

But when I think about the trip now, it’s the little moments that stand out just as much as the big experiences.

Sitting together looking out at the water.

Watching the sunset.

Having nowhere else we needed to be.

And knowing that we were starting our married life somewhere that felt completely magical.

The Maldives will always be more than just a holiday for us.

It was our honeymoon. And I don’t think we’ll ever forget it. 🤍
